The House With a Clock in Its Walls (book review)

The House With a Clock in Its Walls, by John Bellairs, is the story of ten-year-old Lewis, who leaves his home to live with his eccentric Uncle Jonathan. Lewis is amazed when he is told that both his uncle and his next door neighbor are witches! Lewis wants to learn magic, but his uncle forbids him to use magic books. When Lewis disobeys his uncle and brings evil Selenna Izard back from the dead, he has no idea of the trouble he has caused...

This book was a fast read, and also full of suspense and spookiness. I would not like to read this book in the middle of the night!!

I give this book 8 out of 10 stars.

I love this book and the two sequels that Bellairs wrote, Annie. In my opinion, the sequels are even better than the first as they add another characters, Lewis' friend Roserita into the mix! The second book is The Figure in the Shadows, and the third is The Letter, The Witch, and The Ring. There are actually even MORE books in the series (I think 9 total) but only the first 3 were written by John Bellairs...so I haven't read the rest :p

I'm very glad you enjoyed it Annie! You're right, it's a spooky book, but in a delicious way.

I have not yet read the sequels but I really look forward to getting my hands on them.

I know I've read some John Bellairs books when I was a kid, but cannot for the life of me remember which ones. I know they had great covers and illustrations by Edward Gorey, though, which is how I came to be a fan of his work from a young age.
