The animal I'm reading in honor of is our family's beagle, Baker. We got Baker on October 28, 2006, as a birthday gift for my brother Gray. On that day, everyone was so excited. When Mom, Dad, and Gray headed off to Lollipop Farm, everyone at home was anxious to see what kind of dog we would get. They came home with a nervous and excited beagle who came with the name of Baker. What we didn't know was that Baker had thyroid problems, so we had no clue why he kept gaining weight. By January, he weighed a whopping 43 pounds, which is a lot for a beagle! Now, Baker takes a pill for his problem, is on a diet, and now weighs only 38 pounds. Everyone is so happy that Baker became a part of our family (except maybe Aldo, our cat)!

What a cute dog! Thyroid problems are always fun, my dog likely had one of those, but it was hard to say because golden retrievers are never skinny!
You are reading some great books, glad that you are joining in!
Cute dog :) Great list of books there, Annie. I'm reading Watership Down too. I've been meaning to read that one for awhile now...as in "years", lol. So I'll finally get around to it! I've heard that it's quite a sad book. Hope you enjoy the Rats of NIHM, it's a childhood favorite of mine! I tried Avi awhile back and just couldn't get into him..I read Crispin: The Cross of Lead. I've been meaning to give him another chance though, so if you like Poppy and Rye, maybe I'll try that one!
Baker is cute, though his tongue looks funny to me. Our dog, Marburg, is part German Shepherd, part Corgi, and part Chow, and the Chow part gives him a black tongue. (Someone told me that the only other animal with a black tongue is a giraffe, but I don't know if that's true.) Anyway, dogs with nice pink tongues look funny to me, because that's not what I'm used to seeing.
Awww, what a cutie. I miss our dog but have so far resisted my daughter and wife's urgings to get another one. I'm sure they will probably win out in the end!
